Advanced Middle School Reading and Writing (6-8th)
In Advanced Reading and Writing, students will have the opportunity to expand their reading and writing aptitude through advanced reading as well as through academic and creative writing assignments. This class will prepare advanced middle school students for the more rigorous English Language Arts coursework assigned in upper level high school classes. The course will include challenging reading assignments that will improve students’ critical reading skills and their ability to analyze literature. Grammar, vocabulary, and close reading lessons will also help students prepare for future success on English Language Arts standardized tests (in particular, students will learn concepts that will improve their SSAT and SAT scores). The analytical reading and writing assignments will include focus on authorial craft and style and the elements of strong writing. Class discussions and guided reading questions will develop students’ critical thinking skills through their active engagements with each week’s texts. Class activities will be focused on teaching students close reading skills and fostering students’ independent thinking. Analytical writing and creative writing will help students “read like a writer.” This course is suggested for advanced students in grades 6-8, including returning students previously enrolled in WeLight coursework who wish to continue to build their English Language Arts skills as well as talented newcomers.
